FIRST LOOKS: MARVEL’S M.O.D.O.K. ON HULU

M.O.D.O.K., which stands for Mechanism Designed Only For Killing, is a first-of-its-kind in more than one way. This stop-motion animated comic-comedy takes viewers into the vibrant world of a Super Villain on a mission: maintain his legacy and with any luck, his marriage. If you don’t think this is for you, give it a chance and if you think you’re going to love M.O.D.O.K. spoiler alert: you will.

Aimee Garcia, who we chatted with this week, plays Jodie: a mom blogger on the rise who isn’t going to be dragged down by her big-headed (literally) husband. Jody is a lovable matriarch who makes a historic entrance as she originates a Latina character in the Marvel Universe.

This animated adventure is a wild ride of emotional and physical battles with internal demons and external rivals such as Iron Man played by Jon Hamm.

I want to take a beat and talk to my non-Marvel following folks: M.O.D.O.K. is a chance to have a laugh and enjoy an immersive experience that will have you raising an eyebrow, and perhaps even your hopes that M.O.D.O.K. has a chance at a happy ending. You might even be pleasantly surprised that he has moments of, dare I say, feminist rhetoric.

Now, if you are a Marvel fan - you will appreciate the tiny nuances that went into creating this magical wonderland of weird. Filled with oddities that somehow make sense and plot twists that follow a classic, yet completely unique, heroes journey M.O.D.O.K. flips the script on what is acceptable and just super villain behavior.

Far from perfect but always trying, M.O.D.O.K. is a modern day villain that is as thoughtful about his family life as he is his main mission: maintaining control of his evil corporation that’s being taken over by Silicon Valley scum, that is if he doesn’t self-destruct first.

M.O.D.O.K. airs Friday May 21st only on Hulu.
